Christchurch, New Zealand OECD CO-OPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAMME : BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINAIBLE AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS

چکیده

Insect host range affects risk assessment for biological control agents of weeds and invasive insects, including the cost benefit analyses that are used for determining government responses to new incursions, and for justifying biological control introductions against weeds. This project had three objectives, starting with an examination of scientific contradictions between predictions and field experience with insect host range, a consideration of dilemmas involving prediction of insect host range, and an examination of machine vision for experimentally studying insect behaviour and host choice. These objectives were met and several publications were produced. The study confirmed that insect host range is predictable from laboratorybased predictions following appropriate protocols, based on field experience with 512 agents released against weeds worldwide.

Evaluating Seismic Effects on a Water Supply Network and Quantifying Post-Earthquake Recovery

This paper summarises the impact of major earthquakes, 2010–2011, on Christchurch’s water supply network and what recovery measures have been applied, what worked well, what did not and why. A number of issues related to the open nature of the Christchurch water supply network were identified during earthquakes. It was difficult to manage large water supply pressure zones during the post-earthq...

Operator agency in process intervention: tampering versus application of tacit knowledge

Statistical process control (SPC) theory takes a negative view of adjustment of process settings, which is termed tampering. In contrast, quality and lean programmes actively encourage operators to acts of intervention and personal agency in the improvement of production outcomes. This creates a conflict that requires operator judgement: How does one differentiate between unnecessary tampering ...

Priority Setting Meets Multiple Streams: A Match to Be Further Examined?; Comment on “Introducing New Priority Setting and Resource Allocation Processes in a Canadian Healthcare Organization: A Case Study Analysis Informed by Multiple Streams Theory”

With demand for health services continuing to grow as populations age and new technologies emerge to meet health needs, healthcare policy-makers are under constant pressure to set priorities, ie, to make choices about the health services that can and cannot be funded within available resources. In a recent paper, Smith et al apply an influential policy studies framework – Kingdon’s multiple str...
